Connecting a variable speed pool pump

BoPi is able to control a variable speed pool pump but usually our customers use it for partial control. Variable speed pool pumps are meant to rune 24h a day, 7 days a week at low speed so there is no real point in having BoPi controling the on/off and the low speed.

What BoPi can control is then dependant on the type/brand of pump and more importantly its control box. Most if not all variable speed pool pumps allow for external commands via dry contacts. The issue then becomes how many speeds do you wnat to control via BoPi as each speed requires a relay.

To enable a speed remotely, you need to wire a relay to the contacts for that speed (usually a common terminal and a speed terminal). Once this is wired, with the pump powered on, you can test that relay and it should enable the speed (if it wasn’t the current active one. This procedure is the same for all speeds.

The commonly recommended setup is to setup the pump to run 24/7 at low speed without BoPi’s intervention. You can then use BoPi to control the medium speed to turn it on during the day and if you have a spare relay, the high speed can also be controlled so that you can enable it when needed or plan it for an hour a day for example.

We have seen quite a few variable pumps from our customers and based on their user manual, they are all a variation around the same system. You are welcome to send us an email about your pump so that we may confirm that it is compatible.
